What a couple of weeks!
I’m not sure if you are aware but just over a week ago, I managed to scratch my eye and fracture my eye socket.
This happened Mother’s Day eve, so I spent much of Mother’s Day in the Emergency Department of my local hospital.
Fortunately, due to COVID-19 it was not busy.
I’m OK. And healing well, but it has meant that last week I was NOT at work as I barely had any functional vision, and it’s probably going to take 4-6 weeks for the fracture to heal so Yay for pain management and a bruised eye.
During the midst of cancer diagnosis, Bushfires, floods, COVID-19 and an eye fracture, that has been 2020, I have needed to learn how to accept help. As a proud independent woman accepting help is not always easy. In fact, many of us might struggle to trust that offers to help are genuine. If you are anything like me when people ask how can I help your self-talk might go:
- I can’t think of what I need help with
- I don’t have it in me to show you/ teach you what I need done
- I’ll be fine I’ll work it out
- I’ll just push through, and do it anyway
What has been incredible and somewhat overwhelming for me is the number of people who have not allowed my unexpressed self-talk stop them from finding a way to be a genuine help.
What also overwhelms me is the spirit of community that we have here, and the genuine desire to have each other’s backs.
We all know that to do the work we love, the way we love to do it with the people we are best able to serve, can’t be done without having a collective, a tribe, a group of people who we know have our back. AND what a better way for this tribe to show their true desire to help, is when you are down, and unable to see…
So when the awesome Nicola Moras, took over my FB and social media to communicate that I had had an accident. Something incredible happened.
- Nicola was able to communicate to this community on my behalf what was happening and what people could do to help
- Montoyia Collins McGowan then sent me a message asking me to let her help – she came up with an awesome idea, which was to have guest This is Private Practice episodes.
- Nicola then did 1 post asking for 10 people to come forward with episodes, and in less than 24 hours all the available post were filled.
So, now I can take my time to recover without fearing that I am letting people down; without needing to be answering a lot of personal messages on FB (because I have limited vision at the moment) and this community still gets to connect, learn and share.
These episodes of This is Private Practice are happening daily on Facebook; on Instagram and you can subscribe to the Playlist over on You Tube
I strongly suggest you subscribe and make sure you tune in because there is a LOT of great wisdom being shared.
And from me, from the bottom of my heart I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for your love and your care.
Go be your awesome self
